Although Warburton is one of my favourite hiking places in Victoria, the Ada Tree Walk has eluded me for some time.
Surrounded by rainforest terrain typically associated with Warburton, the track winds from the car park to the Ada Tree.
The track is single file only and crosses several steel bridges and wooden boardwalks, allowing for an incredibly easy and rewarding walk.
The Ada Tree itself is an impressive mountain ash tree that is considered to be one of Victoria’s largest living trees.
Estimated to be over 300 years old, it is said to be the biggest flowering tree in the southern hemisphere.
Now, once you have reached the Ada Tree from the car park, there are two ways to return:
- Go back the way you came
- Continue on the track you came in on which merges into an old logging road
I took the second option, but, in hindsight, I wish I had taken the return option instead of the loop. Yes, you are crossing back over your tracks, but the scenery is so much better in comparison to the logging road.
The Ada Tree Walk is such an easy hike to do that I would recommend it to anyone who has a basic level of fitness.
There are little-to-no difficult sections and if there are you barely notice them because the scenery is so distracting.
The car park has ample spaces and a couple of picnic tables making it ideal for families and weekend outings. There’s also a drop toilet located at the back of the car park.
Lastly, given the track is located in the Yarra State Forest, dogs are permitted but will need to remain on a leash.
Feel free to check out the other hikes I’ve done in the Warburton area below:

- La La Falls
- Big Pats Creek to Starlings Gap
- Starlings Gap to New Federal Mill Return
As always, if you would like to download the track I recorded for the Ada Tree Walk via WikiLoc, you can do so here.
How tall is the Ada Tree?
It’s a staggering 76m high and approximately 820 cubic metres of timber in the trunk alone is more than enough to build 66 average-sized homes.
What sort of tree is the Ada Tree?
Similar to many trees in the Yarra Valley, the Ada Tree is a giant Mountain Ash and is considered to be one of Victoria’s oldest and largest living trees.
It’s said to be over 300 years old and sits above the surrounding rainforest area.
