The Big Drift – Wilsons Prom

On the same day, I was able to wander the Tongue Point return trail in Wilsons Prom, I also had the opportunity to visit the popular location known as The Big Drift.

A seemingly vast sand field smack bang in the middle of coastal bushland area, The Big Drift is a fantastic 4km, Grade 3 return walk located near the entrance of the Wilsons Promontory.

The trail begins at the back of the Stockyard Campsite and initially follows a well-formed and well-signed path through coastal bushland.

Not long after you’ve begun this adventure, the path widens into a field of sorts where you then find yourself following a fence line.

A little further ahead another sign directs you left up a sandy path which eventually leads you out to The Big Drift.

The best way I can describe the land that lays in front of you is that it’s very similar to some of the scenes in Mad Max: Fury Road in that it seems to go on forever.

Furthermore, you really do feel like you are in another world when wandering around The Big Drift and yet it’s located in one of the most popular Victorian national parks.

Unfortunately, I was unable to wander the entire area due to some ominous dark clouds and a pending storm seconds away from erupting.

However, it still didn’t take away from how truly amazing this place is and I can only imagine what it would be like during good weather or sunset/sunrise.

But I am led to believe you can do a smallish circuit in the area which is marked off by small plastic poles similar to those you might in a roadworks site.

Much like the Tongue Point return trail I did earlier on the same day, The Big Drift would be ideal to visit if you’re at the Prom for a day and short on time.

I’d also recommend it to parents who have small children and would ideally like to avoid the crowds that the Prom typically attracts on a weekly basis.

As always, if you wish to follow the path I took to the Big Drift, and have the app, you can do so here via WikiLoc.
